STANFORD, Calif. (AP) — John Godina recorded a personal best in the shot put last week for the first time in six years, and he came close again Monday at the Payton Jordan U.S. Open.

Godina, a two-time Olympic medalist and three-time world outdoor champion, won with a heave of 71 feet, 11 ½ inches at the third event of the Outdoor Championship Series.

"My technique is good right now," the UCLA graduate said. "It's never been better. I can miss and still go 72 feet almost, and that's a good sign."

Godina took over the world lead with a toss of 72-10 at the Adidas Track Classic in Carson, Calif., last week, and came back with another solid performance.

"That was very important," said Godina, who won the event a meet-record fifth time. "I'm actually a little disappointed because I wanted to come back with another (personal record). The results are fine, but it's a bad day when I don't do everything right from start to finish."
